This coming weekend will be the first 2015/16 IBU World Cup race for Australia, and a World Cup debut for Damon Morton, 19, from Marlo, VIC.
On the weekend Damon who is a member of the newly formed East Gippsland Biathlon Club and the VIS Talent Development Program, had his final preparation race prior to World Cup 2 in Martell, ITA.
He performed strongly placing 4th in Junior Men in the Italian Cup 1 held at 1800m in the mountainous town of Martell in Northern Italy. The final medal places in the 10 km Sprint all came down to just seconds with Damon finishing 20 seconds behind 1st, 6 seconds from 2nd and 2 seconds off one of his Livigno Biathlon Club teammates, who was 3rd.
World Cup will be a big occasion for this young athlete, Australia’s only World Cup biathlete this trimester. Damon trains at Mt Hotham, site of Australia’s only biathlon range, and in the Italian Alps at Livigno, under the guidance of coach Luca Bormolini.
We wish Damon all the best for his first World Cup Race, a 10 km Sprint at Hochfilzen, AUT on Friday 14:30 local time, 12:30 am Saturday Australian Eastern Standard Time.
