Coaches Lynn-Maree Cullen and Toscha Stopar, assisted by “Honorary Ambassador” Bob Cranage OAM, ran the biathlon stand at the recent Fast and Female event. The trio introduced several groups of girls and young women to laser biathlon.
We have just held the first of our three major “on snow” weekends, the Paul Race Weekend!
Reports on the Paul Weekend and the Fast and Female event are in the mid-July edition of Australian Biathlon News, click on this link for more: AUS Biathlon News. mid-July 2013
That white stuff is falling, at both Mt Hotham and our sister resort Falls Creek!

Australian Biathlon coaches Lynn-Maree Cullen and Toscha Stopar will be supporting organiser Allison Stoddart with Fast and Female at Falls Creek, Victoria, this Sunday 7 July.
Cullen is a retired World Cup athlete, who assists at biathlon activities in Wodonga, Wangaratta and Whiskey Flat Range at Mt Hotham, Victoria; Stopar was coach at the Inaugural Youth Winter Olympic Games and coaches athletes in Melbourne, Victoria.
Cullen and Stopar will be introducing girls and young women to the new Larsen laser system, which has expanded the participation rate in biathlon exponentially since this new technology was introduced in Australia in February 2013.
Downunder we are hill bounding & roller skiing, while we wait for more white stuff. Here’s a Tour de France reblog to inspire those cross training.
If you thought a bus stuck under a gantry was an exciting beginning to the 100th Edition of the Tour de France or Stage Two’s victory by Jan Bakelants by the barest of margins was nail biting, then Simon Gerran’s inaugural victory for Orica GreenEdge was truly outstanding.
The Tour’s first visit to the island of Corsica fittingly provided Orica GreenEdge’s first stage win at the Tour. It also reminded us that Peter Sagan of Cannondale is not invincible and no one should ever underestimate the talents of Simon Gerrans.
Gerrans is a winner of Milan-San Remo, out sprinting the formidable Fabian Cancellara in the process.
Yesterday’s stage was a photo finish, with the Victorian coming out ahead.
The day really belonged to Orica GreenEdge, not just with their first and much needed stage victory, but also with Simon Clarke spending most of the day out front in a…

Many biathletes cross train by cycling, at least one current Australian international cyclist , Chloe “Ranga” McConville, is a former biathlete. Here’s a cyclist’s view up to Lake Mountain, site of the Sprint X cross country event, pics from last week. Stunning countryside, eh? The snowmakers had been busy after these pics were taken to get plenty of white stuff for this weekend 🙂 Right now, he’s gunning for his second Tour de France win, but maybe if Cadel Evans gets sick of cycling, he can try biathlon 🙂
When the shortest day of the year rolled around, many of my cycling buddies went out on epic rides to celebrate the Winter Solstice. I, however, spent most of the day in bed and only left the house to buy fish and chips, so I thought I had better go out for a decent ride on the following day to make up for my laziness. And it turned out to be one of those great rides that really makes you appreciate being a cyclist.
My plan was to ride to Warburton, take the unsealed Acheron Way to Marysville, climb Lake Mountain then either ride the Reefton Spur back through Warburton and home (~235km) or ride the Black Spur to Healesville then home (~215km).
The weather was clear and sunny but very, very cold when I left my house a bit before 9am heading towards Lilydale then to Warburton. Other than…

Another pic from an earlier Sprint X at Lake Mountain … guess this biathlete was keen for the “best dressed” award … dressed for a roasting, maybe? 🙂
Lake Mountain is 120 km from Melbourne, for further info see http://www.lakemountainresort.com.au
Fast & Female is coming to Mt Hotham’s sister resort, Falls Creek, VIC, AUS on Sunday 7 July!
F&F was started in Canada by cross country champion Chandra Crawford, who is sister of current biathlete Rosanna Crawford. F&F is aimed at encouraging girls aged 9-19 to get into sport – and stay in it!
Falls Creek is located within a designated park, thus our F&F ambassadors will be introducing girls to our new Larsen laser systems, which use Class 1 (0.3 milliwatts) laser. Girls, how many targets out of five can you light up?
For more info, see: Fast and Female Falls Creek_print
The first Fast & Female event will be on at Falls Creek on July 7, hosted by Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club in conjuction with the long-running Ski de Femme day. Registration is open online via the Eventbrite website.
