As the Summer Olympic Games are on in Rio, for our latest news in detail, we thought we’d step back a couple of months, to one of our summer biathlon events.
The New South Wales Branch of Australian Biathlon has run training and events based at Hornsby Range in Sydney, for a number of years.
The June 2016 event was a special weekend, with guest International Coach Luca Bormolini running a full program for new and experienced participants.
NSW Branch Convenor, John Joyce, reports:
“The June 2016 Camp for the NSW Branch of Australian Biathlon was very successful.
Seven training sessions were conducted by Luca Bormolini, from the evening of Friday 17, to the afternoon of Sunday 19 June.
The sessions were a mix of rollerskiing and shooting.
We were very lucky with the weather, as rain was forecast for the weekend. The heavy rain held off just long enough for us to finish our Sunday morning rollerskiing session.
Participants attended one or more sessions, ranging from Masters to Experienced to Junior to Come and Tryers.
T
he Juniors attended the weekend sessions with the Masters. This was to give the Juniors coaching before the [Australian Biathlon National] Camp at Mount Hotham. The Juniors maintained a good level attention in their sessions and showed they were enthusiastic.
Luca gave the Masters and Juniors separate activities, while out rollerskiing and at the Range. Luca’s enthusiasm meant that we started our Saturday rollerskiing session despite the light rain.
We were rewarded later with great views of Sydney Harbour, as the rain stopped and the clouds lifted.
Phillip and Gen Colebourn ran the Hornsby Range efficiently, allowing good shooting training. Many of us also enjoyed a welcome lunchbreak at their home on Sunday, which helped encourage the Camp atmosphere.
The attendees found the sessions really worthwhile, and we all made a lot of progress.
Luca was pleased with the Juniors, as their skills at rollerskiing and shooting improved tremendously.
Many thanks to:
- Luca Bormolini for his great coaching
- the Colebourns for organising the logistics of the weekend, and running the Range sessions
- North Sydney Smallbore and Air-rifle Club for allowing us to hold the shooting at their Club, and providing some extra supervisors
- Australian Biathlon for supporting the event”
